Ask for Angela: Venues offering you a discreet way out of uncomfortable or unsafe situations

Ask for Angela is a safety initiative that helps people quickly and safely remove themselves from uncomfortable or threatening situations by discreetly asking venue staff for assistance.

Hi, I'm Angela. I'm here to enhance your safety on a date, night out, or any time you're in one of our member venues. Bars, restaurants, cafes, and other venues that join the Ask for Angela scheme will have staff trained on how to help you if you feel unsafe - simply ask if I'm working tonight.

Coming soon: Ask for Angela - the UK charity

Ask for Angela helps women and other vulnerable people get assistance from venue staff if they feel unsafe.

Invented by Hayley Crawford in 2016 and introduced throughout the UK, the new Ask for Angela charity has taken lessons learnt from UK bars and scheme users, to implement an improved model.

Easy-to-implement

The Ask for Angela team has analysed the roll-out, costs, and barriers that bars, pubs, and other venues have faced when implementing Ask for Angela. We've also done a deep dive of the companies that are running similar schemes. We aim to offer an improved, easy-to-implement Ask for Angela for venues.

The Ask for Angela UK charity ethos

Born from the belief that no one should feel vulnerable or alone when they ask for help, our mission is to provide a simple, discreet way for people to seek support in moments of uncertainty or danger especially in social environments.

The Ask for Angela charity provides free training and digital assets, to make implementation in bars, clubs, restaurants, pubs, and other venues as easy as possible. Our number one priority is helping to improve safety for people who feel harassed or unsafe - creating safer spaces for everyone.

We believe in the power of partnership. By working hand-in-hand with venues, local communities, and national organisations, we’re building a trusted movement that prioritises wellbeing, respect, and kindness.

As a charity, we’re committed to:

  • Keeping people safe, supported, and heard.
  • Empowering staff and volunteers with clear tools and guidance to respond confidently and sensitively.
  • Protecting the integrity and heart of the original Ask for Angela idea ensuring it remains inclusive, recognisable, and rooted in care.
  • Advocating for a positive culture shift in hospitality and public spaces, where safety is a shared responsibility.

We’re driven by compassion, guided by evidence, and fuelled by belief in the kindness of others. Every person who asks for Angela deserves immediate, respectful support and we’re here to make sure that happens.
